Craftsman Home and Furniture from Scratch
Shop Layout
Whether you have your shop in a garage, basement or a spare room in your house, it seems that you never have enough room. Â In laying out my shop, I tried to focus on how to best layout the room for the work I do.

The table saw and jointer sit in the middle of the shop with the jointer parallel to the table saw. This allows for easy movement between the two when processing cutting and sizing boards. The miter saw is positioned parallel to the jointer. With these three tools, I can size boards to finished width and length.

Note the door on the left of the far wall goes to a stairway into the garage. Â I move tools, lumber and projects in and out of the shop through those stairs.

At the far end of the shop are the lumber racks, thickness planer, large bandsaw and 2 sanders on mobile stands. One sander is a thickness sander and the other a combination belt sander and disc sander. This area is used to mill rough lumber to a smooth usable size.

The near end of the shop holds the drill press, a Festool MFT table and router table as well as a central dust collection system. I also have a workbench and assembly/glue up table. In this area I use handheld machines for joinery work and sanding. This is also where I clamp up boards to glue up panels and glue furniture components for final assembly.
