My Story

I have been an avid hobbyist woodworker for over 25 years and focused my work on Arts and Crafts design and furniture 18 years ago when we began the design process for our house.  My journey as a woodworker began when I was a student in medical school and needed to build bookshelves for my first apartment.  They weren’t well designed or elegant in their joinery, but they were study enough to do the job.  I then bought a number of pieces of used furniture in “antique” stores and thought to myself that I would like to build similar pieces of my own.  In the 1970’s, there was quite a lot of used oak furniture available, some of it was Arts and Crafts style, that I found interesting to build.

My education in woodworking began with watching Norm Abrams weekly TV show New Yankee Workshop.  I marveled at the machines he used and the projects he built.  I began to acquire some of the tools that I saw Norm use.  I eventually attended a one-week workshop at Marc Adams woodworking school in Indianapolis which began my journey on building fine furniture.  More recently I have been learning new skills and project plans from YouTube, Instagram and websites.  Most of my education over the last 15 years has come from the projects I have done on our home and for family members.  I keep a daily journal on the projects I build and what I have learned is reflected in the notes on the rooms and furniture on this website.
