Library Room

The library room is on the lower level of the house and contains a kitchenette, fireplace and bookcases.  The back of the fireplace over the staircase is covered with stone to give the appearance of a stone foundation.

The fireplace and paneling was my first project for the library room.  The fireplace box was covered with drywall and had an open shelf when the house was built.

I first tiled the fireplace with Rookwood tile using the tree of life tile to anchor the corners.  I learned a lot in tiling the study fireplace and so the tile and grout came out much better.

The bookcases to the right of fireplace were built by Clear Creek Amish furniture craftsmen.

The last project in the room was the kitchenette.  We placed a kitchenette in the room because the bedrooms where our adult children and grandchildren stay when they come and visit.  The tall cabinet on the right was built first and then the upper and lower cabinets.  The upper and lower cabinets were built as a single unit.

The end cabinet was challenging because it had to go up to the 9’ ceiling between the ceiling drop and wall.  I designed the cabinet to hold a microwave behind retracting doors.

On the upper cabinets, I made my biggest mistake in all of the work I have done on the house.  When I measured the face-frame for the pair of doors, I did not allow enough room for the hinge hardware.  I needed to narrow the openings by 1 ½” so I added a strip of wood to the end stiles of the face-frame to allow enough room.  I hid the error by putting a bead detail on the side that was mated to the stile.  Fortunately, it matched the bead detail that I had used in other areas of the project.

We chose a glass tile mosaic to match the colors of the fireplace and cabinets
