Craftsman Home and Furniture from Scratch
Great Room
Walking out of the study to the left is this large mirror on the inside wall of the great room. We added this mirror to see the woods behind the house through the wall of windows on the back side of the house. To mount the mirror on the wall, I screwed half inch plywood to the wall and attached a J channel to the bottom of the plywood. The plywood was sized to extend 4” around the beveled mirror when it was mounted. The mounting was done by a glass shop. I made the frame fit around the mirror and pinned it to the exposed plywood with a headless pinner. I used a pinner because headless pins don’t show and are strong enough to hold the frame on.

This is a close up of the frame.
In several of these pictures you can see the stair railing detail. The stairs and railing were designed and built by an elderly craftsman who took over 3 weeks to complete the work.

The only furniture piece I made for the great room is the home entertainment center.
I got the dimensions and overall design for the end pieces from one of Stickley’s design books, double door bookcase #719. I split the single unit into two end units and reversed the door swing. Also, I made the sides of the cases out of plain sawn white oak so that the edges surrounding the doors was quarter sawn and would match the quarter sawn faces of the doors. I used reproduction Stickley hardware on this piece. The middle unit was designed to hold a 55” flat screen TV and is supported by pull out drawers to allow access to the back of the TV.

I made this mirror for the half bath off of the great room. It is a simple mirror design that can be built by a novice woodworker. It is hung with a French cleat just as the one in the dining room.

After moving into the house, we realized that I could not possibly make all the furniture for the house in a timely fashion so we found two new Stickley pieces that we liked and a custom furniture builder who could make a coffee table to match.
I found the plans for the coffee table in one of my woodworking magazines and gave them to the furniture builder. We gave him one of the drawers from the Stickley couch table and he was able to come up with a stain that was a close match.
