Dining Room

The dining room is to the right of the front entrance and is defined by three tapered columns.  This takes advantage of the wide entrance way to give an open feeling to the area.  We sometimes place a table in the entryway for large gatherings.

This view of the dining room is toward the front of the house and shows how the upper windows provide light and visual interest into the room.  Note how the trim and woodwork ties the upper windows to the lower windows.  This same detail is used in the study to define the wood paneling in the room.  The entire first floor has white oak flooring with a natural finish.

My main contribution to this room is this side board and the mirror above it.  When we were designing the house, I asked Perry Bush to create a notch to accommodate a built-in sideboard.  The door design came from the commonly used Arts and Crafts exterior windows that used a 3 over 1 pane.  When choosing trim stains, I chose Minwax Ipswich Pine 221 because it gave the tone and color that we wanted on both plain sawn oak as well as quarter sawn oak.  This stain was used on all of the trim, wood windows and doors as well as the built ins and furniture I made for the house. The cabinets were finished with wipe on oil-based polyurethane and the trim and doors were finished with brush on oil-based polyurethane.  The lesson I learned here was to test a number of stains and finishes on samples of the wood you are going to use to make sure the end result will be what you want.  The hardware on the cabinets is Stickley hardware that I purchased at Rockler.com.  I will comment that there is less expensive hardware than Stickley that also gives an authentic look.  I will show that hardware on a free-standing sideboard that I built.

The mirror has beveled glass in a mitered white oak frame with a ¾ “ surrounding frame.  The mirror is hung using a French cleat and the surrounding frame allows it to fit flat against the wall.
